Hope Mirrlees, Jane Harrison and the Old One in Paris, 1915. The soldier in the photo is HM's brother, 2nd Lt. William Henry Buchanan Mirrlees
(1892-1964, ret. as Major General R.A., C.B., M.C.). The two traveled to Paris in late 1914 hoping to see him at the front, and returned to Paris in early
1915. This is the only photo I've seen of The Great Bear. Helen Verral gave him to Jane Harrison at the height of the teddy bear craze in 1906. He
became a central figure in the rich fantasy life enjoyed by both women.

This photo was copied from the Hope Mirrlees page on the Dead Poets Live website. The original print is in the Hope Mirrlees Archive at
Newnham College, Cambridge.
