Nathan van Patten purchased of a copy of the first edition of The Rivet in Grandfather's Neck shortly after its issue by Robert M. McBride Co., New York, in 1915. It was his first acquaintance with James Branch Cabell. It would be another ten years before he discovered the works of Arthur Machen.
